The new 2.5 ghz P4's have definitely taken the lead over the Athlons, but the Athlons can be had for a very reasonable price. I've been building systems for years using AMD chips, and I've never had a problem.
I used to work for tech support for a mobo manufacturer, I used to get hundreds of calls from people thinking their AMD chip wasn't working right, but whenever I asked them what they set their jumpers to, it always turned out to be that they had the settings work. A piece of silicon should be perfectly reliable if you take care of it.
